Ruang Aksi Goes to Campus – Green Jobs in the Energy Transition Era: Opportunities and Aspirations for Youth in Future Careers

From September to October 2024, Climate Rangers Jakarta, with support from Koaksi Indonesia, organized the Ruang Aksi Goes to Campus – Green Jobs in the Energy Transition Era: Opportunities and Aspirations for Youth in Future Careers.

This initiative took place at four universities in the Jabodetabek area: the University of Indonesia, Bogor Agricultural University, Pertamina University, and Kristen Indonesia University. Each event successfully engaged over 100 students, featuring expert speakers who play pivotal roles in advancing Green Jobs in Indonesia.

About Ruang Aksi Goes to Campus

Ruang Aksi Goes to Campus is part of Koaksi Indonesia’s Green Jobs campaign. This multiparty discussion forum focuses on Green Jobs and is held at various universities across Jabodetabek. Universities were chosen as the venue due to their role as centers of excellence and their strategic position in driving sustainable development. Additionally, campuses serve as hubs for students to explore renewable energy issues and career opportunities in Green Jobs.

The primary goal of this initiative is to deepen understanding and foster conversations about Green Jobs among students and the broader public. To achieve this, Climate Rangers Jakarta, supported by Koaksi Indonesia, hosted public discussions at four universities, each addressing the theme: *”Green Jobs in the Energy Transition Era: Opportunities and Aspirations for Youth in Future Careers.”* This theme connects Green Jobs with the concerns and aspirations of young people regarding future career prospects.

Ruang Aksi Goes to Universitas Indonesia

The series kicked off at the University of Indonesia on September 26, 2024, attracting nearly 100 students from various faculties. The event featured speakers from diverse backgrounds, including:  

– Azis Kurniawan, Policy and Advocacy Manager, Koaksi Indonesia  

– Ferdy Fabian, Public Sector Ecosystem Development Manager, PMO Prakerja  

– Andono Warih, Head of Energy Division, Jakarta Provincial Manpower, Transmigration, and Energy Office  

– Maria Kayla Augusta, Corporate Marketing, ATW Solar Indonesia  

– Geger Riyanto, Lecturer, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, University of Indonesia  

Key discussion points included:  

1. Policy Challenges and Upskilling Needs: Speakers highlighted the complexity of Indonesia’s energy policies and the need for workforce upskilling to compete in the Green Jobs sector.  

2. University-Industry Collaboration in Green Technology: The importance of partnerships between universities and industries to drive green technology development was emphasized, enabling students to gain hands-on experience and relevant skills.

Ruang Aksi Goes to IPB University

On October 3, 2024, the event moved to Bogor Agricultural University, drawing over 100 students. Speakers included:  

– Fitriyani Sofyan, Communication and Campaign Manager, Koaksi Indonesia  

– Achmad Taufik, Head of Green Industry Transformation Program Development Team, Ministry of Industry  

– Eko, Environmental Fund Management Agency  

– Adi Dwianto, Owner and Manager, Rumah Mahika  

– I Putu Santikayasa, Lecturer, Department of Geophysics and Meteorology, IPB  

Discussions focused on:  

1. Regenerative Agriculture’s Role in Green Jobs: Regenerative agriculture was highlighted as a key driver in carbon sequestration and biodiversity conservation, offering significant Green Jobs opportunities for youth.  

2. Educational Institutions’ Role in Green Jobs Development: Universities were urged to adapt curricula, conduct solution-based research, and collaborate with green industries to prepare students for Green Jobs.

Ruang Aksi Goes to Universitas Pertamina

On October 10, 2024, the event was held at Pertamina University, attended by nearly 100 students. Speakers included:  

– Ridwan Arif, Research and Knowledge Management Manager, Koaksi Indonesia  

– Ferdy Fabian, Public Sector Ecosystem Development Manager, PMO Prakerja  

– Hari Nugroho, Head of Manpower, Transmigration, and Energy Office, Jakarta Provincial Government  

– Husni Mubarrak Lubis, Head of Student Affairs Directorate, Pertamina University  

Key topics included:  

1. Energy Transition’s Role in Creating Green Jobs: The renewable energy transition was identified as a major driver of Green Jobs across supply chains.  

2. Local Government Support for Green Jobs: Jakarta’s Regional Regulation No. 5/2023 on the General Energy Plan was discussed as a policy framework incentivizing private sector investment in renewable energy, particularly solar power.

Ruang Aksi Goes to Universitas Kristen Indonesia

The final event took place at Kristen Indonesia University on October 16, 2024, with an overwhelming turnout of over 170 students. Speakers included:  

– Fitrianti Sofyan, Communication and Campaign Manager, Koaksi Indonesia  

– Ferdy Fabian, Public Sector Ecosystem Development Manager, PMO Prakerja  

– Ayiful Ramadhan Asit, Head of New and Renewable Energy Section, Jakarta Provincial Manpower, Transmigration, and Energy Office  

– Marcel Bonifacio Tirta Wijata, Business Developer, PT Sumber Energi Surya Nusantara  

– Leonard F. Hutabarat, Associate Professor, Kristen Indonesia University  

Discussions centered on:  

1. Youth Awareness and Training Access: The lack of awareness and training opportunities for youth was identified as a major challenge, necessitating an integrated Green Jobs roadmap involving government, industry, and academia.  

2. Universities’ Role in Raising Awareness: Universities were encouraged to enhance collaboration with industries and governments in renewable energy research, internships, and clean energy startup incubation.

Through Ruang Aksi Goes to Campus, Climate Rangers Jakarta and Koaksi Indonesia aim to raise student awareness about Green Jobs and foster collaboration among government, private sectors, and educational institutions to prepare youth for careers in this field.
